Woodbridge got their season started on Saturday with a home fixture against

neighbours Southwold. With the mishap of last

Saturday(Melon,Bally),Woodbridge were a game behind Southwold who had beaten

Haverhill 74-0 in their opening game.

Southwold kicked off on a fine, warm day for running rugby.Woodbridge were

under pressure from the start and gave away two penalties,Southwold's kicker

after missing the first, slotted the 2nd for a 3 point lead. After the restart

Woodbridge were awarded a penalty which was pushed wide of the posts. This

lead to Southwold having more ball in the Woodbridge half and from a scrum

went wide and with some poor communication between the backs on

defence,scored a unconverted try to take a 8 points to nil lead.Woodbridge

seemed to shake off their slow start and began to come back into the

game. With players beginning to gel the home-side were making in-roads into

the Southwold half. After being awarded a penalty full back Will Ball slotted

it making the score 8-3.Southwold responded with a penalty of there own to

take the score out to 11-3.Conner OReily, having a storming game, attracted

some unwanted attention from the opposition hooker.Amazingly, even after the

ref saw the blatant punch and deemed it only warranted a yellow card instead

of a red.The resulting penalty kicked was missed and Southwold had a 11-3

lead at the break.

After half time Woodbridge began to take control of the game, running the

bigger Southwold side around. After camping inside the Southwold half, and

having a period of sustained pressure, the home-side backs split the mid

field open and centre Jona Crisp ran in from 45m,to score a fantastic try

which was converted by Man of the Match Will Ball.Another 3 points soon

followed and Woodbridge found themselves in the lead by 13 points to

11.Woodbridge were awarded more penalties but were unsuccessful, missing a

total of 5,or 15 points. With the introduction of Brown,Armour and

Yorke, adding fresh legs, the game seemed like it belonged to

Woodbridge.Another backs move that Crisp run in another try only for the ref

to call for a forward pass.Southwold dug deep and showing more experience

managed to get into the Woodbridge half and camped on the Woodbridge try

line. This saw their centre kick a last minute drop goal (just like Ipswich

Y.M in the cup last year to steal a draw!)to steal a dramatic 14-13 victory.

Southwold had benefited from their game the week before and deserved their

win.Coach Manning said," We missed 15 points and that told in the end,our

kickers need to sort that before next Saturday. The boys began to gel and

started to look like we were going to score more tries. The more games we

play as a unit, the better we will be. Some solid performances from

Conner,Ben,Jona,Will and Nathan show there is alot of promise there."

Woodbridge now have a hard away game against Cantabs next week.Cantabs will

be a stern test with their big forwards who gave Woodbridge a torrid time

last season, hopefully Woodbridge can come away with a win.
