Broadstreet 3rd’s continued their impressive unbeaten start to the season, running in 8 tries for the 2nd successive weekend, against the Sutton Coldfield outfit, Spartans RFC. Anyone who witnessed our forwards practicing line-outs before the game might not have predicted such a comprehensive victory, however as soon as the game commenced Broadstreet 3rd XV once again showed their class and pulled apart a spirited Spartans 2nd team. After only 5 minutes scrum-half Paul Lydster set the tone of the afternoon with a jinking run from 10 yards out. Wing Darroll Watts kicked only our 3rd successful conversion of the season from 19 attempts! Broadstreet 7 – Spartans 0

On 15 minutes Spartans were awarded a dubious penalty, following a dust-up involving prop Aidy Jones. The jet-setting loosehead assures us that he was kicked in the head which is why he reacted angrily however I heard from a reputable source that he copped one from his opposite number after trying a crafty reach-round in a ruck! Following that roundhouse from Hai-Kai Karate Kid, moody John Brown came on briefly as a blood replacement. Broadstreet 7 – Spartans 3

After 20 minutes, a good solid scrum gave Liddy the platform to dart down the blind-side for his 2nd try. Broadstreet 12 – Spartans 3

Just 5 minutes later, the versatile Jamie Dodd, who had another great game – this time at centre, made a surging run which enabled Liddy to roll back the years and complete his hatrick. Broadstreet 17 – Spartans 3

A couple of huge tackles from Liddy and open-side flanker, Laurence Parker, and the return of Aidy Jones like a man possessed, undoubtedly helped Broadstreet win the battle physically and psychologically, and Liddy and Broadstreet’s 4th try of the game probably killed off any hopes Spartans had of a comeback. Broadstreet 22 – Spartans 3

Half-time: Broadstreet 22 – Spartans 3

Broadstreet took their foot off the gas at the start of the 2nd half (possibly because Steve Allen and their gobby fly-half were too busy talking about getting it on in a locked-up garage) however Spartans lacked any potency in attack to capitalise on this. However, centre Jamie Dodd soon got us back on track and capped off a mazy run with a well deserved try which was converted by Danny Rowstron. Broadstreet 29 – Spartans 3.

With 30 minutes to go 23-year old Mark Furze replaced full-back Mark Atkinson and went on the left-wing with Darrol Watts moving to full-back.Furze made an instant impact and his pace and quick hands rounded off the best try of the game. Darrol Watts couldn’t miss the kick as it was right under the posts. Broadstreet 36 – Spartans 3.

Replacement wing Mark Furze finished off an impressive half-hour with his 2nd try of the game, Broadstreet 41 – Spartans 3, however shortly after, by pulling up at Beeches Brook ball-in-hand, he demonstrated some sly jug avoidance tactics that were duly noted. Street ended the game on a high with wing Andy Hirons completing this 8-try demolition job by being bummed over the line by moody John Brown. Broadstreet 46 – Spartans 3 This makes it 3 wins in a row, and 26 tries in total! We’ve got a friendly next week at home against Vipers RFC (Leicester). Next league fixture is 2nd Sept away to Newbold.
