Peter Drewett has been named as England Students Team Manager to succeed Keith Green who stood down at the end of last season after three seasons at the helm.

Drewett, 51 and a former PE and Sports Science lecturer at Exeter University, brings a wealth of both playing and coaching experience to the job including having been Director of Rugby and Head Coach at Aviva Premiership newcomers Exeter Chiefs between 2006 and 2009.

He led the Chiefs to two Twickenham cup finals and to second place in National Division 1 in both 2008 and 2009 while, as a scrum half earlier in his career, he himself played in two BUSA finals at Twickenham for St. Luke’s College, now Exeter University, and turned out for both Exeter RFC and Bath Rugby.

In 1992 he joined the England RFU and worked in various guises with the England Students and U19’s before helping guide the England U21’s to massive success including Six Nations Grand Slams in 2004 and 2006.

He has also set up his own performance and coaching company Perform 2XL but is `over the moon’ to be back with the RFU and coaching such an important group of players.

He says: “I’m really excited to be back working with the England Students and, hopefully, I’ll bring a lot more experience to the job this time around and additional value to the whole set-up.”

It also means he’ll be back working closely with an old Exeter team mate and friend Paul Westgate who along with James Farndon will be coaching the England Students squad this season.

“It’s important we continue the good work that our predecessors such as Keith Green put in place,” says Drewett with authority. “The England Students side helps at the elite end of student rugby to create the opportunity for the very talented young players to continue in the professional game when they leave University.

“It’s therefore also very important for us to establish an excellent relationship with all of the coaches around the country and to create the necessary opportunities for their players.”

It will all start to come together for Drewett and the coaching staff in December when they hold the first of their two day trials, Dec 14/15, followed by a second session early in the New Year, Jan 4/5th.

The squad will then be selected for the first of three internationals against Portugal, France Students and a yet to be confirmed third fixture.

Drewett, co-author with Tony Biscome, of the book `Rugby Steps To Success’ and a pioneer of Tag Rugby, currently lives in Sidmouth along with his partner Jenny and has three sons, Tom the eldest at 26, Olly, 24, eight year-old Richie and a 20 year-old daughter Megan who’s studying at the West of England University in Bristol.

Tom’s interests lie in the music world while Ollie is currently in Sydney working as a fitness adviser and turning out for the Manley club.

And Richie, who like his father is a scrum half, is playing for Sidmouth RFC Youth who, next season, celebrate their 40 anniversary.

Having prepared teams and players for over 150 internationals and eight various World Cups during his previous 14 years with the RFU Drewett is certainly the ideal man to take the England Students to even higher levels while at the same time preparing a precious stream of young rugby talent for careers at the very top of the game.
