Your News Houghton 32 - Seaham 20

The annual Dave Giblin Memorial Match against local rivals Houghton was a big success once again. A big crowd travelled through to Dairy Lane to see a keenly contested game and they certainly weren't disappointed.

Houghton took an early 10-0 advantage thanks to some crisp interplay between their backs and forwards. However, a defiant Seaham dug their heels in stubbornly and pegged the score back to 10-10 courtesy of tries by Dave Davison and young Shaun Dawson. They even had a chance to take the lead when they rumbled a rolling maul from halfway to the verge of Houghton's line but they were penalised for going over the top just short of the line.

Once again the hosts took the lead with their third score of the day only to be pegged back to 15-15 by a well-worked try. Seaham's backs and forwards linked well and Chris Bland found himself on the end of a scoring pass from his big brother, Michael.

Houghton looked set to run away with the game going into the final quarter when they scored a brace of converted tries in quick succession to move 29-15 ahead. Once again, Seaham's forward power earned them another score when John Dawson broke away from a rolling maul and crossed the line for his side's fourth try to reduce the gap to 29-20.

Houghton were to have the final say when they worked their way deep into Seaham's half and manufactured a drop goal with the final play of the game to run out victors by 32-20 and retain the trophy.
