Your News Portsmouth Ladies 5 - Woodbridge Amazons 5

A Ref-delayed game finally kicked off in cool dry conditions with the Amazons showing their pattern for the game with several phases of back play getting the kick off quickly back over the halfway line. They found themselves too stretched however and, with their forwards left to defend, the Portsmouth No 13 ran down the wing to score in 3 mins. The visitors continued to feed fast ball to their backs however and play stayed in the home team’s half with some strong runs from Johnson, Maharaj and Rickard only stopped by some penalties at the breakdown. The scrums seemed evenly balanced, both supplying reasonable ball but it was eventually the Amazons who capitalized when they won a penalty in front of the Pompey posts and Rickard eventually scored.

Portsmouth started the second half in more determined form putting pressure from the off. A serious injury forced a change of pitch as the Ambulance was called and the Amazons were back in an attacking scrum in Portmouth’s 22. However this was to be short-lived as serial penalties allowed the hosts to run for territory in a change from their previous kicking pattern. Other than one of two arcing runs from Johnson and Rickard, Pompey made the most of possession and camped in the Amazons half. The visitors tried to counter from deep but too often Portsmouth no 12 Mitchell and 13 Burgess ran it straight back at them. A missed attempt at goal denied a battling Portsmouth who extracted some fearsome defense from a beleaguered Amazons as they held out for the draw in a match that early-on they had looked like winning.
