On a bright but intermittently damp day Ely Tigers big forwards set up several successful phases of play to establish dominance and spent the early skirmishes in their hosts 22. The Warriors were slow to start and clearly had the lighter of the two packs like the last time they met. However Ely didn’t have it all their own way as the Woodbridge backs enjoyed running the kick-over possession back at the visitors who fought hard to get the ball back in the ruck. Frequent penalties were conceded by both sides as this disruption at the breakdown continued. The Warriors intelligent use of kick and chase saw their No 10 Simpkin-Betts score on 20 mins. The game remained largely central with Ely finding it difficult to win territory in possession as the smaller Woodbridge forwards harried and harangued until Steward scored shortly before half time to make it 12-0.

From the restart Ely came back hard and had clearly decided to kick over more to gain territory. Woodbridge continued to defend from deep and nearly got away with it on a couple of occasions through their wingers but Ely were sharper in this half. The penalties continued and Ely missed a couple of attempts on goal before their continued recovery was rewarded when a maul caught the hosts unawares to push over and give hooker Hayler a converted try. A clearly rampant Ely remained largely in Woodbridge’s half against some committed tackling and after their No 5 had a try held up their hooker Hayler scored his second. The conversion was missed making it 12-12. The Warriors had their work cut out against a rejuvenated Ely who smelled victory but through continued tough tackling managed to hold the draw.

Final score Woodbridge Warriors 12: Ely Tigers 12
