YORKSHIRE and Lancashire will represent the North in the Quarter-finals of the National RU Under 20 Championship after the final series of group games were played yesterday.

The White Rose team completed their unbeaten canter into the last eight with an 82-7 demolition of Durham at Malton & Norton RFC, winning the Northern Championship in the progress, while Lancashire were 30-13 winners of the runners-up decider against Cheshire at Crewe Vagrants RFC.

The prize for the Northern Champions is a home Quarter-final tie against the Midlands Runners-up East Midlands, while Lancashire will travel to Notts, Lincs & Derby, the Midlands winners, for their Quarter-final match on the weekend of March 27. Venues and dates have still to be confirmed.

In yesterday's other Northern game, Northumberland scored two tries in injury time to snatch a 29-17 win over Cumbria at Cockermouth RFC after a top-class encounter had seen the sides on level terms at 17-17 with the final whistle approaching.

Yorkshire wrapped up their programme with an victory at The Gannock, but Team Manager Keith Dyas was full of praise for the opposition.

"Durham were badly hit by injuries before the game, were reduced to 14 players with an injury just before the start and to 13 with another during the game, yet they played like heroes," he said: "They played their hearts out and I couldn't praise them enough."
