What a difference a week makes. After their capitulation at Basildon,
Woodham responded brilliantly to bounce back and win at the difficult
venue of Wymondham. Although the hosts opened the scoring with an early
penalty this was to be their only points of the half as Woodham's counter
attacking from deep paid dividends on a firm, wide pitch. Poor kicking from
Wymondham allowed a young Woodham team to play to their strengths.
Gateson,Dukelow and Duggan all scored excellent tries. All converted by
Kilbey at fly half. Wymondham may have had the edge in the scrum but they
could not cope with Woodham's fast running and offloading game. The game
would have been out of sight by half time if it was not for some last ditch
tackling and colt Kilbey had managed to convert his four penalty kicks.
Half time 3-21
After the break Wymondham changed tactics and started to play nine
man rugby. This style of play had instant reward and the hosts made good
yards, as Woodham were penalised at the breakdown. Wymondham scored
two well worked tries from driving mauls close to Woodham's line. 15-21.
Woodham made the game safe, after some brilliant offloading by the
teenage back row of Rawinsky and Bewick allowed the ball to be moved
across the line for Bull to score with plenty of numbers to spare. Kilbey
converted. 15-28. Kilbey moved to scrum half and replacement Brown came
on and had an immediate impact. From one of his breaks he released Gateson.
Woodham's top try scorer had no problem stepping the last defenders and
score under the posts. Kilbey converted. 15 - 35. Wymondham did respond
and with the last play of the game managed to score in the corner.
Final score 20-35.
A great win after last week. With five colts playing and the majority of the
team in their early twenty's there is plenty to build on. A special mention
must go to veteran hooker Dieter Parry who stepped into the tight head prop
position and did a sterling job.
