Your News Northern club launch U17 competition

Lymm RFC will launch the defence of the National RU Under 17 Cup they won last season at Worcester when they visit Guisborough on Sunday (February 28, 2010).

Thirty-two clubs from the North will be going into action in the four competitions, with Caldy, who visit Keswick in the Plate section, the only other previous winners since the tournament was created in 2005.

The key objectives of the competition are to offer a competitive rugby structure to an age group when players traditionally drift away from the game and to provide a player development pathway from junior to adult rugby for many young club players across the country.

The competition is growing in status year on year but the emphasis remains on competitive rugby for club players.

The finals will be held on May 2 at a venue to be confirmed, with the second round of divisional fixtures scheduled for March 14.

Sunday's draw is:

Cup: Guisborough v Lymm, Kirby Lonsdale v Ryton, Consett v Vale of Lune, Altrincham Kersal v Doncaster.

Bowl: Darlington Mowden Park v Liverpool Collegiate, West Park St Helens v Warrington, Waterloo v Driffield, Selby v Acklam.

Plate: Keswick v Caldy, Macclesfield v Harrogate, Sandbach v Blaydon, Sheffield v Chester.

Shield: Ripon v Stockport, Winnington Park v Furness, Sunderland v Roundhegians, Hessle v Liverpool St Helens.
