Woodbridge applied early pressure against their old foes on a good pitch in bright, chilly sunshine. Playing downhill and with the wind and sun they clearly thought the first half presented an opportunity to get a good lead and first victory at Thurston for 5 years. They won the first two scrums and a line-out against the head, while the host’s struggled to get any space in their own 22. After a drop out from a scrum penalty against Thurston for foot up, Crowther carried, Sanday scored and Yorke converted in the shadow of the Bury Free Press photographer’s obscene camera lens.

Thurston came back determined from the restart but hard-won territory was lost by both sides as they failed to break good defence when in the opposition’s 22 and the ball was sent sailing back down the field for the packs to have to grind out the territory all over again. Eventually Thurston’s maul pushed 30 metres against inadequate defence and their No 8 scored to the delight of a noisy home crowd. The visitors had to settle for a penalty three points from their counter attack .

Thurston started the second half with their tails up, quickly taking three points to level the score at 13. The Woodbridge scrum rose to the challenge, winning several against the head, and allowing their backs to attack repeatedly until Ben MacIntyre broke through to score a Yorke-converted try. Thurston were reduced by injury to 14 men towards the end of the game but it failed to dampen their enthusiasm and they ended the tough, ugly match denied by some great do or die tackles from MacIntyre and Steward.
