Rugby Union clubs in Lancashire are joining together with Derian House Children's Hospice in a unique partnership to raise funds and seek sponsorship. The aim is to raise funds to provide care for terminally ill children throughout Lancashire and support their families as well as helping to provide facilities for young people to play and enjoy rugby.

The new initiative will be officially launched at Derian House on January 11th when former England captain and rugby legend Bill Beaumont will be on hand to explain the aims of the partnership.

He will be joined by leading rugby officials and by Margaret Vinten, Chair to the Trustees of Derian House, along with General Manager, Alasdair Swan and Fundraising Manager, Susie Poppitt.

Clif Barker, the president of Lancashire Rugby Football Union, said: "This will be a very exciting partnership. We are proud of the way we provide facilities for young people to play and enjoy rugby here in Lancashire. But we have recognised the need for some kind of central funding which would allow clubs to seek grants to help them improve what they offer.

"We are very pleased to be associated with Derian House and we hope that by working together we will be able to raise those important funds that will allow us to develop initiatives for the benefit of youngsters, whilst providing crucial care and support for terminally ill and life threatened children throughout the North West. In our case we will place an emphasis on promoting the Rugby Football Union's new established five core values which cover teamwork, respect, enjoyment, discipline and sportsmanship.

"We will work within that core value framework to encourage newcomers into the game of rugby while at the same time ensuring that those young people already playing continue to enjoy the sport."

Susie Poppitt, of Derian House, said: "We are delighted to be involved in this joint venture with the Lancashire Rugby Football Union and look forward to developing a strong fundraising partnership over the coming months. In addition to our ongoing funding requirements we are currently raising funds to staff and equip our new purpose built Young Person's Unit. It's hoped that this partnership will be the means of making a substantial contribution to the campaign."

The funds raised will be divided equally between the two charities.
