Your News North clubs get first class posts from RFU and Sport England

FIFTEEN community rugby clubs from five Northern counties will soon be erecting new sets of posts thanks to a sponsorship partnership involving the Rugby Football Union and Sport England.

Nationwide, 75 clubs are benefitting from the RFU's goalpost safety scheme, with each receiving a set of new posts, delivered free and complete with 'THIS IS RUGBY' branded post protector pads.

The clubs were nominated by their constituent body (CB) on two criteria: those most in need of replacing their existing posts and those who represent the core values of the game under the 'THIS IS RUGBY' banner.

Six Yorkshire clubs will be receiving new posts - Adwick-le-Street, Baildon, Northallerton, Sheffield, Withernsea and Guisborough - while across the Pennines, Lancashire will have Bolton, Bury, Heaton Moor, North Manchester and Sefton as beneficiaries.

Jarrovians and Sedgefield from Durham and Kendal and Gosforth from Cumbria and Northumberland respectively complete the list.

"The old wooden posts on our second pitch were a bit rickety and one was so big that getting the post protectors to fit was a challenge," said Sefton RFC spokesman Alan Coleman: "The new posts, which are located on the pitch used by schools and our juniors, look really smart. They improve the image of the club and should help with our club-school links.

"Also, because we now have the right posts and the right post protectors, they are that much safer to use. It's a lovely gesture from the RFU and one we're very grateful for."

Simon Winman, the RFU's Head of Funding & Facilities, hailed the initiative as a great example of co-operation between the Union, CBs and member clubs.

"We have been working with the CB facility co-ordinators to see which clubs have issues with their posts and which ones best exhibit the core values of the game," Winman said.

"This initiative is part of our commitment to improving pitch furniture and post safety throughout the game. It also supports the reaffirmed values of the game with post protectors carrying 'This Is Rugby' branding."
