Your News Woodbridge Amazons outrun Teddington

On a heavy pitch in showery Woodbridge an injury-depleted Teddington were keen to reverse the 17 - 13 loss the last time the two teams met. The Amazon’s pack established an early dominance but their backs were slow to start allowing Teddington to establish a hold on their 5m line and some poor defence gifted their scrum-half, Katie McBride, an opportunistic try on 7 mins.

Slowly the Woodbridge defence rallied and their backs started to click looking more and more dangerous until one of Teddington’s kicks made touch, Woodbridge took a fast throw-in for Captain EJ Stearn to hand-off repeatedly and score and Stephanie Cotton to convert. Moments later and a throw-in was passed out safely for Rickard to cut through and score to end the half 12 - 5 in the lead.

The Amazons started the second half in control, camping in their guest’s half and, from a line out again, their backs connected for Stearn to score her second try. Despite a counter from Teddington it wasn’t long before Amazon No10, Michaela Woodley, took route 1 to score and, shortly after, Rickard scored her second. The home forwards were dominating contact, pushing over the visitors and winning turnover ball time and again to give their back line space to run at them. Cotton in particular worked hard as she repeatedly picked and drove, on one occasion freeing up Rickard who sent Kat Mead away to score before scoring her own breakaway, hat-trick try from her own 22.

Seven tries down Teddington could have been forgiven for giving up but their hard-working McBride dove over to snatch another 5 points and end an exciting game where the Amazons strong pack had supplied the platform for their talented backs who gave an excellent demonstration of creative, hard running. Cotton kicked 5 out of 7 conversions.
