Woodbridge hosted Cantabrigian determined to get their season back on track after two recent losses. Early skirmishes on this bright and calm winters day demonstrated that the visitors large pack had some energy and fancied the maul as they drove Woodbridge back to their 22 and within five minutes Pascal Relut their busy and creative scrum half kicked on to score.

The Warriors countered from the restart and good calling by scrum half Eddie Johnson stretched Cantabs left and right creating the opportunity for Donovan Steward to take the lead with a diving try and Tristram Steward’s conversion. Despite occasional counter attacks from the visitors the Warrior defence held firm and Captain Bobby Armour, having a great game on his return from injury, rallied his pack to give Johnson a great platform from which to launch repeatedly the Warriors backs who had the better of their opponents. Even though Woodbridge gave away too many silly penalties Cantabs failed to capitalise on them - kicking away possession as when their penalty on 25 minutes was caught cleanly, Josh Simpkin-Betts at fly half passed out of contact and gave Lewis Ballard the 25m dash through poor tackling to score.

Hard scrummaging continued to generate opportunities for the Warriors but, as the half came to a close Cantabs showed they weren’t done as they pushed Martin Wisbey over to score which Chris Lovett converted. Half time 12 points all.

Warrior forwards demanded the restart ball and Simpkin-Betts kicked over for Woodbridge to pilfer the counter and recycle sending him blasting through the middle to score a converted try between the posts. The home team gained in confidence and took control of an increasingly tetchy game as their pack continued to hold the much bigger Cantab forwards and their backs played imaginatively to threaten in attack and disrupt in defence to the delight of the partisan crowd gratefully enjoying possibly their best first XV game this season. No matter how hard Cantabs tried they couldn‘t manage to get Warriors to knock on high balls - the effect was quite the opposite as they just kept feeding the counter-attack. Eventually Tristram Steward took the opportunity for 3 penalty points to seal an intelligent and action-packed victory against tough opposition.

Final score - Warriors 22 - Cantabs 12.
