Your News Mal Gregory, Woodbridge stalwart scores first ever try on new third pitch

Time was that a local rugby club had really hit the big time if it had its own pitch and perhaps a shed (clubhouse). Woodbridge Rugby Club, home to the Warriors and Amazons senior men’s and women’s teams, christened their new third pitch this weekend with three simultaneous matches; the Warriors v Maldon, Harwich and Essex University.

In a fitting baptism for the new pitch it was long-term Club die-hard, Mal Gregory who scored the first ever try on the pitch. His subsequent request that the pitch be named ‘Sod Mal Gregory’ was declined.

The new pitch is essential to support the Club’s growing membership - not only at a senior level but also it’s extensive Youth section of some 300 boys and girls. Long-suffering Groundsman Bob Double, inspecting his carefully nurtured playing surface after the match, commented “If I’d known he was going to do that with it I’d have concreted it over! Seriously, it is satisfying to see the Club expanding and more and more youngsters like Mal getting involved!”.

Woodbridge Rugby Club’s successful appeal to youngsters comes not only from the growing appeal of the game nationwide but also from its full schedule of fixtures and other events organised by a tireless group of parents and RFU qualified and CRB checked coaches. To join log on to
