SOUTHWOLD SWALLOWS 27 – CHELMSFORD LADIES 7
The Southwold Swallows welcomed Chelmsford on what had to be the windiest afternoon of the season. Expecting nothing more than a hard fixture with Chelmsford being top of the league. Southwold knew it would not be an easy afternoon of rugby.
It was the Swallows, Amy Gregory who was first to score giving Chelmsford an awakening of things to be thrown at them. Southwold played the territory game better than the opposition, all forwards ensured that the majority of the game was played in the Chelmsford half showing off their well practiced rucking there was no stopping the Swallows.
Chelmsford still looking to score continued to press for the remainder of the half, and their endeavors were rewarded with a penalty 5 meters from the Swallow try line, with their number 1 scoring under the posts and converting saw them leading 7-5.
The pack continued, on their dominance winning every scrum, Laura Nutt, Sharon Larter, Sally Turner and a long over due return of Natasha Amps continued to ruck down the pitch at every opportunity, in particular Claire Phelps and Laura Marjoram playing flankers not letting a single Chelmsford players pass them all afternoon.
A great break saw Chantelle Savage at full back saw her sidestep and run the ball in from 50 meters, again 10 minutes later only to be tackled 1 meter from the try line. With great support running from Nina Roe she recovered the ball scoring a try. Finishing half time with a 15-7 lead
Showing good unity among the forwards, superb scrummaging, continued to press early in the second half. Winning a scrum, saw Bev Whyte who rarely gets stopped hand off 5 players and crash over the try line. The second half also included a try from Kim Roberts, which she converted to put the icing on the cake.
It was a great victory learning from previous wins, the Swallows reacted to the referee and played as a team. It was always going to be about the kicking and a battle up front, and that was something Chelmsford just couldn’t live with on the day.
