Your News Broadstreet 13 - Macclesfield 34

Strong wind was a blessing in disguise for the visitors as they continually opted for the corner rather than attempt normally kickable penalties. Flanker Dan Baines crossed the try line twice in the first half from the ensuing set-pieces as Macclesfield exercised their obvious advantage over Broadstreet’s tight-five.

After responding with a Richards’ penalty, Broadstreet’s job became harder when prop Paul Hurst was sin-binned five minutes short of half-time for punching. Macclesfield’s other flanker Evan Stewart, keen not to be out done by his team mate, scored his first from the subsequent pressure.

HT 17-3

The second half started bizarrely when Broadstreet’s Wayne Lester was sin-binned for coming in at the side of a ruck after the assistant referee had signalled the Macclesfield winger had been tackled into touch by the fullback.

Players and management seemed to be perplexed by the decision but the incident kick-started a flurry of scoring with another penalty from Richards on 59 minutes. Macclesfield quickly retaliated with a devastating run from the base of a scrum by Number 8 Jonathan Keep who set up Stewart for his second try two minutes later.

Centre McGrory then started the try of the match with a 50 metre break from his own 22 before ‘Street’ winger James Hunt scored beneath the posts on 66 minutes. However, Macclesfield punctuated the scoring with a powerful run by Josh Fowles who off-loaded to replacement Ed Sayce for their fifth try.

Frustrated ‘Street’ rounded off the game with a hat-trick of cards when second row Rooke was sent off for punching.
