Your News O2 Scrum on the Beach relocates to Southport

O2 Scrum on the Beach events have survived some hostile weather in the past, but the first visit to the North West has presented conditions which have forced the RFU organisers to relocate tomorrow's event in Southport.

Conditions on the resort's Ainsdale Beach are such that health and safety issues have brought a change of venue to Southport Rugby Union Club to ensure that the event can proceed safely.

While the move will take the sand out of the equation, for the 30 teams involved in the rugby competition and the youngsters looking forward to getting involved in the Play Zone activities, the switch will ensure that the fun day goes ahead.

Nor will the North West teams lose their chance to stake a claim for an outing in a Tag Rugby tournament at Twickenham in September. The most classy sides, judged on style of play, look and attitude, from the eight O2 Scrum on the Beach events being staged this summer, will go forward to Twickenham.

"So far we've had an all-girl team in pink at Clacton and a youth club team from Great Yarmouth qualifying and I'm sure we'll get another interesting group from Southport." says Leisure Rugby Project Manager Dan Brown.

"We've managed to cope with wet weather in the past and, given the unpredictable nature of an average English summer, we've probably been quite lucky, but this move is purely a public safety issue. The winds are quite high at the moment to make erecting the inflatables a problem and it is forecast to be even breezier tomorrow, but I'm sure we'll have a good day at the rugby club."

England wingman Paul Sackey will be adding a touch of international sparkle to proceedings and he's ready for whatever the weather has to deliver.

"O2 Scrum on the Beach is a great way to have fun and stay involved with rugby this summer and the switch of venue won't dampen our enthusiasm," said Sackey.

"The chance of a Twickenham appearance for the teams with real style is a big incentive and that should give entrants even more of an incentive to get down to the event and show off their skills."

O2 customers will have access the exclusive O2 Blueroom on the Beach, a VIP chill-out area with free massages and refreshments. They can also try out their speed reaction skills on 'Batak Duel' and try to beat one of the England players' top scores. To find out more about the events, visit

O2 Scrum on the Beach is part of the RFU's Play On campaign, sponsored by O2, which aims to keep 16-24 year-olds involved in and playing the game as they move from school into higher education and beyond.

Southport RUFC (PR8 4QW) is located Waterloo Road, Hillside on the A565 Liverpool - Southport close to Merseyrail's Hillside station.

The event will run from 10am and continue throughout the afternoon.
