Your News Didsbury Toc H 24 - Upper Eden 21

Didsbury upset the formbook, beating visitors Upper Eden 24-21 in North Lancs & Cumbria.

Didsbury had been forced into making a number of changes from their regular starting line up, but centre Andy Popoola made a timely return to the side after injury.

The game started badly for Toc H as their visitors flew out of the traps and quickly opened up a 0-16 lead, through two tries and two penalties. Didsbury showed their battling character, and bounced back from the early setbacks to begin to impose themselves on the match. Didsburys new front row combination of Walker, Puddy and Trapp were more than a match for their opposite numbers, and this allowed quick scrum ball to be transferred to the backs. Free scoring Toc H winger Pete Davies has been going through a quiet spell prior to Saturday, but given the ball one on one there is no better finisher in the league. This was demonstrated to devastating affect with Davies scoring two tries either side of halftime, adding the conversions himself to close the gap to 14-16.

Didsbury soon took the lead for the first time, with Davies slotting a penalty to make it 17-16. The home side were quickly further ahead when Davies completed his hat trick with another converted try, taking his and the teams tally to 24. Upper Eden managed to score a late try to close the gap to three points, but Didsburys defence, unlike the first ten minutes, held strong and repelled any further attacks.

The victory keeps Didsbury just above the pack of teams battling to stave of relegation. Didsbury return to action after the Easter break, with a visit to second place Rossendale.
