Hutton returned to the top of the North Lancs 2 league table with a comfortable victory over a spirited Clitheroe side. Following last weeks defeat, it was a good response from Hutton, who played some good rugby on a breezy afternoon. The home side started the brighter of the two teams, looking to offload and run the ball at every opportunity. Hutton took the lead in the first quarter of the half when Brad Horton drove over from close range after good work by the forwards at the breakdown. The home side then had to withstand some pressure from the Clitheroe pack, but good defensive work forced the visitors into some handling mistakes. Hutton extended their lead when some good handling found Craig Cameron, who evaded would-be tacklers to score underneath the posts. Tobutts conversion made it 12-0. Hutton were winning good ball at the lineout which set the platform for effective rolling mauls and allowed the backs to get the ball wide. Both sides were reduced to 14 men for ten minutes when Huttons Walmsley and the visitors scrum half were yellow carded. Just before half-time, Hutton scored their third try when Andy Tobutt broke through after a good midfield run from Cameron. Tobutt converted his try to give the hosts a 19-0 lead.

The second half began with Hutton taking the initiative from the restart, with forwards supporting backs at every chance. Both sides were back up to the full quota of 15 players with Hutton surging forward finding holes in the visitors defence. It didnt take long for the fourth try of the game to arrive, when another break from Cameron this time found Brendan Maher who crossed to make the score 24-0. Hutton broke away from the restart and the fifth try of the afternoon soon followed when some great interplay between forwards and backs found Maher again who touched down in the corner. Tobutt added the conversion to give Hutton a 31-0 lead. Another midfield break set up another forwards drive and after throwing the ball wide, good support play found Tobutt, who touched down for his second try of the afternoon. Hutton were working hard at the breakdown, and forced a number of turnovers which resulted in some excellent counter-attacking play. It was following some slick handling that Cameron managed to register his second try with a fine individual effort. The scoring was completed for the home side by Stuart Little, who intercepted a Clitheroe quick lineout and touch down to give Hutton a 46-0 lead. The final minutes were played out in Hutton territory but the defence held firm to register another shut-out. This was an important victory for Hutton who got back to winning ways in good style.

Next week, Hutton welcome Colne and Nelson to HQ looking to continue their unbeaten home record.
