Your News North Lancs 2 - North Manchester 0 (0) – (10) 27 Hutton

Saturday 24th January 2009

Hutton preserved their unbeaten league record with a hard-fought victory at fourth placed North Manchester. Although winning the home game comfortably earlier in the season, Hutton knew this was going to be a tough game in testing conditions.

The visitors started the game slowly and gifted the home side field position through early mistakes and penalties. Hutton began to get a footing in the game and were controlling the set pieces, but struggled to convert this possession into scoring opportunities. The first try of the afternoon came halfway through the first half when some good handling and support play found Brendan Maher who touched down in the corner for his first club try. Tobutt’s conversion missed to leave Hutton with a 5 point lead. Injuries to a number of North Manchester players forced frequent stoppages and meant that the game went to uncontested scrums. Hutton were then reduced to 14 men when Livermore was harshly penalised and received a yellow. The home side were defending strongly and disrupted most of Hutton’s attacks but couldn’t stop the visitors from registering their second try when the pack rolled towards the line from a lineout. When the forwards were brought down, scrum half Caslake found a gap to dive over from close range. The conversion attempt drifted wide, so Hutton led 10-0. Just before half-time, the visitors went down to 14 men again when Mercer was carded and went into the break with their 10 point advantage still intact.

Still a man down, Hutton began the second half as they did the first and gave away possession at the breakdown but the home side were struggling to create any meaningful attacks. Hutton’s possession improved and were finding holes in North’s defence, and following a blindside break, quick handling allowed Maher to score his second try of the afternoon. The conversion attempt missed to leave Hutton 15-0 ahead. Another Hutton attack was then halted by a trip and the home side were reduced to 14 men with their winger receiving a yellow for the offence. With a man advantage, Hutton stretched their lead further when a midfield break and support play resulted in a try for replacement Tom Noot. Tobutt landed the conversion to extend the visitors advantage to 22 points. The final period of the game was another scrappy affair with the North trying to unsettle Hutton at every opportunity, and a second yellow card of the half saw the home side finish the game with a man down. In the final minutes, Hutton scored their fifth try of the game, with Maher completing his hat-trick after another blindside move.

Hutton produced another gutsy display and were able to stop North from scoring for a second time this season, scoring 94 points in the process. Hutton will look to maintain their unbeaten league record when Tarleton visit HQ on Saturday in what promises to be an entertaining encounter.
