Your News National League 2 North review

Two tries from winger Ben Mitchell either side of half-time helped Huddersfield to their first win of the season. Trailing 21-0 at home to Hull, the struggling Yorkshire side looked to be heading for yet another defeat. But Mitchell’s brace and second-half tries from Tom Owen and Anthony Stringwell inspired ‘Field to a 26-21 victory.

At the other end of the table Stourbridge continued their relentless march towards the SSE National Two North title with a 12th straight bonus-point win away to Sheffield Tigers. Stourbridge, though, had to rely on the award of a penalty try five minutes from time to beat Tigers and maintain their perfect record. No.8 Drew Harper had earlier bagged a brace of tries, as well as a yellow card, with a further score from wing James Hearn.

On Saturday Stourbridge entertain second-placed Hull Ionians who continue to do all they can to prevent the league leaders getting out of sight. Ionians remain eight points off the pace after recording win number 11 against Otley. Both sides scored four tries apiece but it was Ionians who came out on top, 31-22.

Preston Grasshoppers and Caldy produced an identical scoreline at Lightfoot Green, with ‘Hoppers taking the points. Full-back Sean Taylor converted all four of his side’s tries, including his own, as well as adding a penalty for a 16-point personal haul. Dominic Moon (2) and Ed Webster were also on the scoresheet for ‘Hoppers.

Dudley recorded their highest score of the season with 39 points at home to a Stockport side that managed 15 in reply. Outside centre Stefan Shillingford capped a fine display with a brace of tries against the division’s bottom club.

With home wins for north-east duo, Westoe and Darlington Mowden Park – against Luctonians and Leicester Lions, it meant that Birmingham & Solihull were the only side across the weekend’s fixture list not to taste victory in front of their own supporters. Instead the Bees had to settle for a share of the spoils in an 18-18 draw against local rivals Bromsgrove.
