Your News Wimbledon 0 - East Grinstead 22

Wimbledon went into this match under no illusions about the quality of their opposition. That they restricted a team averaging 59 points a game to 22 and in the process denying them a bonus point could be regarded as a good result. On the day the Wimbledon players tackled every player coming at them and, best of all, held their discipline in contrast to some other matches this season and allowed them to play the whole game with 15 players. This was very noticeable when some refereeing decisions were questionable at the least.

For their part East Grinstead have their game plan which can at times be un-ambitious but their results this season speak for themselves. The fact that Wimbledon denied them a score for the last half-hour of the match when East Grinstead were seeking their fourth try and a win bonus point speaks highly for the motivation and leadership in the home team.

A greasy ball and pitch caused by a heavy rain shower early in the match was no help to either sides handling and leading to numerous scrums for handling errors. It was also noticeable that neither side achieved dominance in the scrums and whilst Wimbledons attempts to disrupt the East Grinstead line-out were not often successful then they at least had the visitors thinking how to gain good possession. Rob Tait, Ed Lewis and Julian Callanan can take credit for this. Charlie Morgan tried several darts around the fringes but was not given any freedom by the Grinstead back-row. The long kicks by Neil Hallett also kept Grinstead away from periods of pressure close to Wimbledons line.

On the day East Grinstead scored their three tries through wing Nathan Daly on 13min, lock Richard Tredgett on 44 min, centre Walter Downey on 47 min with two conversions and a penalty from outside half Scott Meakin.

On another pitch Wimbledon 2nd XV lost 18 25 against East Grinstead 2nd XV.

Next Saturday Wimbledon First XV travel to Trojans RFC near Southampton in their next League match, kick-off 3pm.
