Stourbridge look a good bet for the SSE National Two North title if they can maintain their impressive early season form. A 10-try, 65-24 win over Stockport was the Saxons’ fourth bonus-point victory on the bounce and continued their perfect start to the season. Will Hurrell, Jamie Hearn and Drew Harper all bagged two tries apiece.
Otley and Hull Ionians are just one point off the pace at the top of the table after they too claimed their fourth straight victories. Otley, though, had it all to do to maintain their unblemished record against Bromsgrove as they trailed by nine points with just eight minutes to go. But tries from Jack Mackie and Daniel Temm rescued four points for the Yorkshire outfit. Ionians were more comfortable winners against Westoe, with a margin of 16 points separating the sides.
Drew Cheshire was again on the scoresheet for Luctonians but his side had their colours lowered for the first time this season at Caldy. Alex Davidson’s outfit was on the verge of losing bonus point territory when Cheshire crossed for his eighth try of the campaign. But the unerring boot of Richard Vasey, who is well set to once again be the division’s top points-scorer, pegged them back with his fifth successful kick of the day.
As a result Caldy are just one place Luctonians in the table and level on points with Darlington Mowden Park who are making a good fist of things at a higher level since their promotion as champions of National 3 North. DMP turned in a dominant display against fellow new boys Dudley Kingswinford to score seven tries in a 41-21 win.
Preston produced a good all-round performance to put seven tries on Hull at Lightfoot Green. Sean Long and Dominic Moon got a brace of tries apiece in the 55-12 victory.
Sheffield Tigers were reliant on the trusty boot of Tom Outram as they made it three wins from four at home to Birmingham & Solihull. Outram converted both his side’s tries and added two penalties in the 23-17 success.
Leicester Lions outscored Huddersfield by five tries to three to rack up their second win of the season. ‘Field have still to get off the mark.
