Your News Lancashire U18's open with a win

Lancashire RU 18 Group got their divisional season underway with an 8-3 win over neighbours Cheshire at Tyldesley RUFC yesterday.

A stiff, cross-field breeze made conditions difficult for both sides, who fought out a typically tough derby encounter that, while not a classic, was competitive throughout.

Cheshire took a 3-0 half-time lead thanks to the boot of fly-half Tom Bills (Birkenhead School & Wirral RUFC), but the home side began to come more into the game in the second period. After a good phase which started with a powerful midfield break by centre Michael Ward (Oldham RUFC), Lancashire worked the ball into the middle of the field and fly-half Jack Turton (Lancaster RGS) popped over a neat drop goal to level the scores.

The Lancashire pack then began to take the ball forward, with flankers Ben Vernon (Hutton GS & Tarleton) and Harrison Collins (Stonyhurst College) leading the way. Lancashire worked the ball to right inside the Cheshire 22 and drew enough of the Cheshire cover to allow left wing Jamie Harrison (Broughton Park RFC) to score the only try of the match in the corner.

A tense final 10 minutes followed, but there was no further scoring and Lancashire now travel to Wigton on Sunday (November 2) for their second game against Cumbria. Cheshire wrap up their three-match programme when they visit Northumberland, who completed their second win of the season when they beat Durham 9-5 at Westoe yesterday having won in Cumbria in the opening game.

Durham will have home advantage on Sunday when they entertain Yorkshire at Darlington.

In the opening North Under 16 games played yesterday, Lancashire beat Cheshire 13-8 at Sandbach, while Yorkshire were 69-0 winners over Durham at Billingham. The game between Cumbria and Northumberland at Carlisle had to be called off because the pitch was waterlogged.

Results: October 12 Cumbria 15 Northumberland 41 at Penrith, Cheshire 0 Yorkshire 30 at Wilmslow. October 26 - Durham 5 Northumberland at Westoe, Lancashire 8 Cheshire 3 at Tyldesley.
