Swanage & Wareham travelled to Rosehill, Sonning, in Reading for this “must win” game in order to escape the threat of relegation from league Southwest 1. Abbey were three points ahead of Swans, and a five point victory would see Swans reversing the positions.

Swans did not start very well conceding eight penalties in the first ten minutes, one of which resulted in a conversion attempt, but fortunately for Swans was missed. After 14 minutes Swans lost James van Tuyl to a shoulder injury, being replaced by Paul Dunsford. Charlie Parish missed with a penalty kick, but from the 22 drop out the Swans three-quarters passed the ball to Charlie Parish who went in for Swans first try out wide, after 21 minutes. Three minutes later the ball was moved to winger David Price-Smith who raced 50 metres down the wing, outpacing his opposite winger to score in the corner ( 0 – 10) to Swans. With seven minutes to go to half time an exquisite grubber kick by Swans prop John Sheldrake to his winger who was tackled short of the line, but made the ball available to Sheldrake who was following up who crossed the try line to give Swans a 15pt – 0pts lead at half time.

Swans started the second half like the first by conceding three penalties, but this time Abbey full back Jack Parsons landed three points for the hosts. (3 – 15). Swans had kept the ball away from Abbey’s flying winger Gavin Dampies, but when he picked the ball up in his own 22 his mesmerising run across the field out- smarted Swans tackling and he went in for a try in the corner.(8 – 15). However on the hour mark the ball was moved to Dave Price- Smith who went 40 metres towards the Abbey try line before he was tackled. Swans hooker and captain Robert Elford was following up, received the pass from his winger and calmly ran the remaining fifteen metres to score Swans bonus point try.(8 – 20). Swans continued to impress and seemed to be in control of the game and with seven minutes to go Charlie Parish landed a penalty to put Swans more than two scores ahead. Although Abbey tried to gain some points towards the end, Swans held on to win by 8pts to 23pts at the final whistle, easing them out of the relegation zone, with this 5 league points victory, with the final match to come next week against Reading.
