Your News North trio fly flag in Daily Mail semis

WITH five out of the eight their challengers knocked out of the Daily Mail RBS School Competition at the Quarter-final stage, Northern interest in the Semi-finals, which start on Saturday (March 10) has been drastically cut.

Cheshire, who were flying the flag for the North with six teams in the last eight of the four sections, are now reduced to just one, Wirral Grammar School, while the other two hopefuls are both from Yorkshire.

Only Leeds Grammar School has reached the last four of a Cup competition and they now face Trinity School, Croydon in the Under 15 Cup Semi-final on Saturday week (March 17, 1pm kick off).

Leeds secured their place with an impressive 17-3 win over a highly-rated Whitgift School team, but Trinity’s 27-7 win over Bedford Modern suggests that the Yorkshire boys face a stern test if they are to reach the showpiece at Twickenham on April 4, 2012.

Unbeaten Trinity have been beaten only once in three years and have yet to have their colours lowered this season, with former England Counties and Saracens prop Aaron Liffchak putting his professional stamp on rugby at the school.

With 756 points scored and only 111 conceded in their first 20 games and nine players in the Harlequins School of Rugby, Trinity represent a major hurdle for Leeds, especially in the front-row, where the amiable Liffchak is a master-craftsmen and expert tutor.

Leeds, however, reserved their best performance of the season for the Whitgift encounter and in doing so demonstrated their ability to rise to the challenge.

“We’ve had one or two displays of that calibre during the season, but the circumstance of the game make that our best,” said Coach Owen Edwards: “We’ve had a good side for about three years and we’ve worked hard, put in a lot of hours on the training field and it’s paying dividends.

“The lads all understand what they should be doing and hopefully we can go one step further. We haven’t made any impact in this competition since 1995 when we last reached a semi-final, but we’ve been building some momentum more recently, with our Under 15s of three years ago now playing some very high-quality rugby over the last two seasons at senior level.”

Yorkshire neighbours Harrogate Grammar School appear to be facing the most daunting Semi-final test in the Daily Mail RBS Under 15 Vase when they tackle Sir Thomas Rich’s School from Gloucester.

Rugby plays a prominent part in the life of Sir Thomas Rich’s – they have 19 teams – and the Under 15 team boasts a scoring record of 209 for and 14 against in their five Daily Mail RBS matches to date, including a 52-7 Quarter-final win over St Ambrose from Cheshire.

Wirral Grammar School are first into Semi-final action on Sunday week (March 11, 11am) when they take on The Leys School from Cambridge. The Leys had a convincing 28-6 win against Stockport Grammar School in the previous round and are now looking to replicate their success in the Under 15 Vase three years ago when they lifted the trophy.

Wirral, however, reached the last four with a comfortable 19-0 win over King Edward’s, Birmingham and will be keen to keep Cheshire pride intact after a serious disappointment for the county in the previous round.
