Your News Wimbledon Ladies 9 - Woodbridge Amazons 27

In slippery and damp conditions the penalties and handling mistakes came frequently from both sides. Woodbridge looked the more threatening, preferring to keep the ball in hand despite the mud, running and handing off with some success. When Wimbledon did get clean ball they preferred to kick using Guttridge at no10. This was a flawed strategy as it increased Woodbridge's possession and gave them repeated opportunities to attack so play stayed in the home team's end for most of the first half following a pattern of Woodbridge running and Wimbledon kicking. It seemed only a matter of time before Woodbridge would break through and a penalty for not letting Johnson release on Wimbledon's 5m line eventually allowed the Amazons forwards, especially Charles, to feed Stoppard Baker to score on half time.

Gutteridge's kicking gave Wimbledon a penalty 3 points after the break and they looked sharper putting the squeeze on the visitors pack which reacted with a 20m maul over half way to feed Rickard who set up Stearn to score on the blind. Gutteridge took another three points for another tackling error but the Amazons forwards regained the upper hand to set up Stearn who gave Stoppard Baker another score only to see her break from the restart ruck and get her hat-trick two minutes later and a long conversion from Cotton. Wimbledon's Gutteridge also got a hat-trick of penalties but it was the unstoppable Stoppard Baker who finished the game with her fourth try.
