Your News Southport 2XV tough it out against Hutton

On Saturday, Southport 2nds played against a Hutton side that had started the season with 3 wins and 1 defeat. After a slow start, Southport began to put pressure on the Hutton defence with some good tackles and controlled play. This resulted in an attempted clearance kick being charged down and grounded by Hunter putting Southport 5-0 up, with Swinson converting successfully. Southport then lost concentration allowing Hutton to score a quick try under the posts making the score 7-7 and it stayed that way until half time despite chances for both teams.

Southport made a poor start to the second half with some missed tackles and drop balls forcing Southport back but they defended their try line well. Hutton however did manage to score an unconverted try putting them 12-7 up. This seemed to boost Southport as some good runs from Roberts and Boland positioned Southport in the opponents 22. Quick thinking from a penalty from Boland, followed by some excellent recycling by the forwards meant that Swinson could touch the ball down to level the match.

Southport were again caught out on defence with Hutton taking a 19-12 lead, before a well worked play from the right wing to the left allowed Potter to score in the corner making Southport only 2 points behind. In the last 10 minutes, Southport pushed on but were caught on the break and, although having much of the ball, couldnt manage a final try. Man of the match was Andy Boland.
