Early skirmishes went Woodbridge’s way in this return fixture that Woodbridge lost 3-25 at Southwold. The Warriors made some early breaks on the right wing with Steward particularly showing form at 12 but they were unable to profit from it, Whittaker missing a penalty kick. Southwold eventually countered with some sustained pressure in the Woodbridge 22 by better exploiting the many penalties and kicking for the corner. However their attacking backs suffered from indifferent handling forcing No12, Hume, to kick for territory and straight into the hands of Woodbridge’s reliable line-out, Hannon and Rose in particular. Southwold’s Captain, Withey, hit the post with a penalty but the rest of the first half was an exciting to and fro with both side showing commitment and energy to keep the good crowd entertained despite no score.

The second half saw similar commitment by both sides which resulted in a lot of penalties, a few tense moments, and repeated platforms for both sides to attack. Southwold’s excellent scrum half , Chartier, rallied his forwards, particularly Smith, in the ruck to win some good ball at times but as they stuck to a kicking game through Hume possession was all too often kicked away. Woodbridge’s steady forwards; White, Codd and Cooke - supplied similar good ball to launch their running game which saw some flying forays from Steward and Yorke but some crunching defensive tackles from both sides kept the game compelling viewing and even. It was left to an uncharacteristic line-out loss, scrum and penalty against Southwold to give Warrior scrum half, Bruce, the match-winning 3 points from a penalty kick. A tense quarter followed where Southwold camped for a while in the Woodbridge 22 but some outstanding defence denied them a reply and gave a hoarse home crowd and jubilant Warriors a deserved, hard earned victory.
