A try at the start of each half from winger Craig Dowsett helped Loughborough Students retain their place at the top of the National Two North table. The
Students eventually ran out 37-15 winners over Bromsgrove to keep their noses in front of second- placed Caldy, who kept up their side of the bargain with a
29-15 bonus- point victory at home to rapidly- improving Leicester Lions.
The top two have now opened up a little bit of daylight between themselves and the rest following defeats on the road for promotion rivals Westoe – at
Huddersfield - and Luctonians, who were kept scoreless in the second half away to Stockport after two tries from player- coach Alex Davidson had helped
them establish an interval lead.
There was much relief at Brantingham Park as the division’s cellar dwellers, Hull Ionians, defeated Harrogate 24-18 to record only their second win of the
season. Fly- half Glenn Boyd was the star of the show with four successful penalties and a conversion for a 14- point personal haul. City rivals Hull did
Ionians a favour by beating second- from- bottom Kendal 12-6 at Mint Bridge.
Matt Hughes crossed the whitewash twice to take his tally of tries for the season to 13 – the best in the division – as Preston Grasshoppers made it five wins
out of five at home with victory over Nuneaton. Mid- table Otley are the joint third top scorers in the league after putting 46 points on Sheffield Tigers at Cross
Green. Flanker Daniel Temm scored a hat- trick.
