CUMBRIA make a couple of changes to last weeks winning side against Notts, Lincs & Derby ahead of their County Championship Shield semi-final against Surrey at Aspatria tomorrow (Saturday, May 21, 2pm).

In the forwards Ryan Johnson moves forward into the second row to allow Mike Stephens to start at open-side flanker. In the backs Martin Armstrong starts at outside centre, with Gavin Cartmel moving to the wing and Ed Swale, who did well last weekend on the wing and as an emergency scrum-half when Paul Newton was injured, stepping down to the bench.

Surreys return to the County Championship after a five-year absence could not have gone better. They came back with a bang by winning both their pool matches against Sussex and Middlesex.

The team is coached by Dorkings Richie Andrews and England Counties selector Duncan Cormack and based on the Dorking side, with Cobhams hugely experienced former Harlequins lock Bill Davison as captain. Paul Hodgson, the London Irish and England scrum-half is also part of the coaching team.

We have strengthened the squad with players like Bill Davison and others from London Irish Amateurs, Wimbledon, Barnes, London Cornish, Guildford, Old Midwhitgiftians and Sutton & Epsom, and they are enjoying it, playing at different grounds and against different opposition while wearing the county jersey. said coach Richie Andrews.

To have Bill playing at this level with his experience and ability is a godsend. I spoke to him and he said he was moving more into the coaching side at Cobham but he has been great for us.

And of course the driving force thats focussed the minds is to get through to a day out at Twickenham.

Durham wrap up their programme when they entertain Eastern Counties at Hartlepool Rovers RFC tomorrow. Northumberland have already won that section with a brace of victories and will now entertain North Midlands at Alnwick tomorrow week, May 28.
