Woodbridge Rugby Club saw a large and spirited turnout last Sunday for its annual awards day. Club Chairman Rob Simpson greeted players, parents and supporters to celebrate another season of growth and success. A touch rugby tournament was held, food served and the bar was busy before the serious business of the awards ceremony commenced. Coaches took it in turn to recognise the best players of the season and celebrate great performances by the Amazons women’s team, 2nds, Colts and youth teams. A full list of award winners is attached.

Rob Simpson commented “Growing success brings with it growing popularity and demand for facilities from 15 teams means the Club has some serious fundraising to do if it is going to raise the last £50,000 for its £200,000 changing room extension and satisfy youth, women and senior men’s demands for changing space”.

Ambitious projects are being undertaken in every squad to meet this target and this was in evidence throughout as sponsored volunteers walked miles around the circumference of the three pitches from early in the morning to raise funds. Cakes were sold and the Amazons, recently promoted to just 2 leagues away from Premiership Women’s rugby, charged to wash cars as the awards were being presented. In typical style Amazon Hannah Backhouse called in a favour from the Crew Commander of a private Fire engine based at Bentwaters to assist with the car washing. The balance of the open-source water was later used to water the Club’s thirsty pitches.
