Tynemouth Beach, Northumberland is the place for rugby enthusiasts of all ages and both sexes to be on Sunday (July 27, 12noon-6pm) when England centre Jamie Noon will be among a Newcastle Falcons contingent adding an international flavour to the second action-packed event in the O2 Scrum on the Beach tour.
The five O2 Scrum on the Beach festivals continue in August in Birmingham, Newquay and London and are part of the RFU’s Play On campaign, a nationwide project which will provide back-up to the highly successful Go Play Rugby initiative which attracted so many new and old faces to the game during the World Cup.
O2 Scrum on the Beach is the ideal day out for anyone who wants to play or watch beach rugby, test their skills in the state-of-the-art Play Zone, visit the RFU mobile museum and shop, or sit back on the sand and enjoy the live music and entertainment.
There’s also an O2 customer-only Blueroom beach area with free drinks, food, and the chance to chill out with the players.
O2 Scrum on the Beach is part of the Rugby Football Union’s Play On campaign that aims to keep more 16-24 year-olds engaged in the game as they move from school into higher education and beyond.
While 02 Scrum on the Beach is designed to keep young people involved in fun rugby during the summer, the Play On campaign has a wider remit – that of helping young people stay involved as they relocate through educational or employment changes. It has created a network of O2 Pathfinders trained and equipped to guide young players on their rugby journey, campaign within schools and promote rugby direct to 600,000 teenagers, and create more teams, competitions, coaches and referees to sustain the growth of the game. "Keeping young people engaged with rugby during the close-season is a key part of the Play On strategy and the O2 Scrum on the Beach – along with hundreds of other leisure rugby events being run by the RFU this summer – will enable us to do that."
