Your News Steve Hanley forced to retire

Sale Sharks' winger Steve Hanley has been forced to retire through injury. Hanley sustained the injury in the Sharks' game against Bayonne last season. His announcement was made public at the launch of his Testimonial at Edgeley Park.

Having joined Sale from Aspatria in 1998, Hanley went on to play in 191 games for Sale scoring 104 tries along the way, his record of 75 in the Premiership still standing. He gained one cap for England against Wales at Wembley in 1999.

Hanley said, "I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at Sale Sharks and have some great memories playing for the club. Helping the club to its first piece of silverware in 2002, by beating Pontypridd was very special. I have however been struggling with a disc problem in my back, since the Bayonne game and have received medical advice in that I will not recover enough to be able to play Premiership rugby again. Sale Sharks have been good to me and I have always given y best for the team."
