REIGNING Northern Champions Lancashire Women won the Battle of the Roses at Barnsley on Sunday (Nov 7) when they held the upper hand throughout a keenly fought tussle to beat their Yorkshire rivals 30-17 in the opening fixture of the revamped RFUW County Championship.

Despite a much changed squad from last season, Lancashire travelled in confident mood and from the opening whistle they were in dominant mood, Vale of Lune No 8 Jenny Evans claiming an early try from a push-over scrum.

Yorkshire replied with a solo burst for a try by centre Ruth Labourne, but the visitors hit back quickly when a well-constructed attack ended in Waterloo full back Dani Wiseman crossing in the corner.

The Lancashire scrum was proving a potent force and when Yorkshire were penalised at a set piece, quick thinking by Waterloo scrum half Ally Lewis brought a try for the supporting Waterloo flanker Corinne Allmark.

The Red Rose scrum continued to dominate and though Yorkshire survived one serious scare, when they spilled the ball in midfield, Lancashire seized the chance and Eccles winger Shelley Powe strolled in at the corner.

Lancashire wrapped up a strong first-half effort with another smart piece of interplay which culminated in Wiseman claiming her second try to put Lancashire 25-5 ahead at half-time.

Yorkshire cut the deficit when their replacement fly-half spotted a gap in the usual watertight Lancashire defence to scamper in under the posts and convert the try.

Centre Labourne then gave Yorkshire a glimpse of an upset when she used her pace to score after a Lancashire mistake, but the visitors had the last word when Powe crossed at the corner for her second try to complete the scoring.

I was very pleased with todays team performance and the enterprise, willingness and desire of the whole squad to run with the ball in hand. said Lancashire coach Andy Tither: Very exciting and invigorating.
