STUDENT rugby in Lancashire is set to flourish this season on the evidence of three highly-successful Student Freshers Tournaments held at the Lancashire County RUFC Development Centres during October, with the Merseyside, Manchester and North Lancashire Universities meeting at Waterloo RFC, Sedgley Park RFC and Vale of Lune RFC respectively.

Supplementing the arrival of over 120 students on the RU scene was the presence at the tournaments of clubs keen to develop links between the 'Town and Gown'.

Good examples of this tie-up include Eccles RFC with Salford University, Vale of Lune with Lancaster University, Fleetwood with St Martins College, Waterloo and West Park with Liverpool John Moores and Liverpool Hope, and Preston with the University of Central Lancashire. Manchester University is keen to become linked with clubs through playing and coaching, as are UCLAN.

Alan Holmes, North Lancashire Development Centre Manager, is creating a ground breaking initiative using the social network system Facebook to link students to Lancashire clubs who have opportunities for them to enjoy Saturday rugby.

Lancashire Rugby Project manager Mark Nelson said: The festivals were a great success and have launched our on-going close relationship with the student body in Lancashire. There is a huge number of talented players from all over the country and beyond at our universities and this is a fine opportunity for fostering real synergies between the local clubs and the student base.

Alan Holmes is setting up the excellent Facebook initiative and we are working very closely with the RFU Student Development Officers, John Livesey and Chris Townsend. Lancashire County RFU are committed to supporting student rugby and we are going to form a Lancashire Students team which will be another first for the county.
