MARK Nelson, who was appointed as Project Manager for a new and exciting initiative aimed at raising the standard of rugby union at both club and representative level in Lancashire in June, has not been letting the grass grow under his feet.

The project targets the individual needs of the Lancashire's 92 clubs and seeks to provide assistance and support in making a significant improvement to the areas outlined by them, coaching being one of the main strands of activity.

Under the direction of the Fylde man, the Lancashire County Rugby Development Project initiative has produced a series of coaching seminars for club coaches throughout September and October which have brought expert guidance from some of the countys best-known names.

Pete Anglesea presented a session on the breakdown with RFU senior referee Andy Taylorson at Ruskin Park, while British Lion and Leeds Carnegie hooker Andy Titterall presented on fitness at Sedgeley Park and Dave Baldwin, the England Counties and Preston Grasshoppers coach, presented a line out and restart session at Fylde with players from the Fylde Centre of Rugby Excellence, along with Alan Holmes the North Lancashire Centre Manager.

Over 80 coaches attended the sessions that are part of the ongoing programme of Coach Development within Lancashire being instigated by Mark Nelson, the Project Manager, who said: It is a massively important part of the Lancashire Development project to aim to run high quality coaching sessions for our senior adult club coaches.

To have access to such gifted coaching presenters is a great boost and the sessions are very well received. We are working closely with Ian Thompson, the RFU Coaching Coordinator for the region, to make a real difference to our coaches understanding of the game.

The programme continues with a session on defensive play at Blackburn on Wednesday 27th October with Nick Corrigan, England RL Under 20s Defence Coach, and a series of sessions with Brian Ashton leading up to Christmas which will be advertised shortly.

Mark Nelson is a former RFU Youth Development Officer and Academy Manager at Sale Sharks and has been Director of Rugby at Fylde, Orrell and Vale of Lune. He is currently also Chairman of the Lancashire Coaching Committee and will be working closely with Tom Fitzgerald, the Secretary of the Lancashire Rugby Development Partnership.
