Your News Hartlepool Rovers 3XV 20 - Seaham 19

Seaham travelled down the A19 in optimistic spirits; in spite of a shattering spate of last minute cry-offs that looked set to ruin their plans. They were bereft of virtually their first choice pack but were blessed with an abundance of raw young talent behind the scrum.

For many of the youthful Seaham side, it was the first occasion they had met this particular opposition, or played at The Friarage, so they were venturing into unknown territory with a weakened team. Still, they accepted the challenge that was thrown down to them, took the game to the opposition and delivered a solid display that was full of true Harbour grit.

Seaham skipper John Dixon led from the front and marshalled his young backs well. In a reversal of the usual pattern, all of his sides points came from the backs. Dixon set the trend with his sides opening try and promising young winger Jack McCallum capped a man-of-the-match performance by notching his third try of the season. Full back Graeme Steel also registered his first try of the season as well as two conversions.

Seaham looked good for what would have been a fine win against creditable opponents as they held a two-point advantage going into the final minutes. Unfortunately, luck wasnt to be on their side and they conceded a very late penalty, which was converted, and the hosts stole a single-point win.

However, although they lost by a point, the Harbour Lads claimed a moral victory and returned home with their pride intact. They will now look to take stock of the days events, work on a few things at midweek training, and carry their fine form down to Whitby next week.

Final Score: Hartlepool Rovers III (20) SEAHAM (19)
